Credits for Prior Learning for Veterans

VetAffairs CB209565

Every year, as we honor those who have served our country on Veteran’s Day, we’re reminded of the unique skills, training, and experiences our veterans bring home with them. Did you know many of those skills can count toward a credential or certification? The FastForward program is designed to help students earn credentials for in-demand jobs like welding, HVAC, healthcare and more in just six to 12 weeks. For veterans, this path can be even faster with Credits for Prior Learning.

What is Credits for Prior Learning?

Credits for Prior Learning takes your lived experience, military experience or other job training and applies them as credits to your FastForward certification. That means instead of starting from scratch, you can build from what you already know.

How to Get Started

If you are a veteran looking to take the next step in your civilian career, the steps are very simple. Virginia’s Community Colleges have advisors and career coaches in the military office to guide you every step of the way.

Be sure to have your Joint Services Transcript (JST) available. An advisor will help you upload that into the portal in order to see what your experience qualifies for. The Credits2Careers portal will show you the programs available to you and where you best fit.

And it doesn’t end there. Continue to connect with your advisor throughout your program to help you look for jobs, qualify for funding, and more.
