For Megan, the decision to pursue a career in the power line industry came from wanting to have a stable career and a secure future for herself and her 12-year-old daughter.
“The best part that appealed to me was just the financial stability and the fact that we are always going to have a need for power in the future,” Megan said. “I think the power line industry is going to be better for my family overall. It’s going to provide better benefits, long-term 401k and a retirement plan. I don’t have that currently.”
Earlier this year, Megan enrolled in Southside Virginia Community College’s Power Line Worker Training program, a FastForward Credential Program. On top of that, she works full-time as a restaurant manager. Five to six days a week, Megan juggles working full-time, attending the training program and being a single-mom. Megan wants to ensure that she is setting a good example for daughter.
“It’s never too late to learn something and it’s never too late to go back to school,” she said.
Most of Megan’s days consist of attending the program, taking an hour nap, working her full-time job, taking another hour nap and then doing it all again. Despite only getting a few hours of sleep each day, Megan knows that all of her hard work will be worth it in the end. It is her determination that keeps her going.
“There is a demand in the power line industry and there’s not a lot of females,” Megan stated. “I believe that this is the right time for women to come into this business.”
Megan completed the program in May 2019 and was very quickly hired by Dominion Energy.
