By now, navigating the virtual world isn’t anything new. However, that doesn’t make it any less challenging. Virtual learning and instruction specifically, can be a difficult thing. Between device malfunctions and user errors, issues are bound to arise while learning online, however there are some things you can do to make this process a little bit easier.
Have an open mind.
Virtual learning is going to be completely different from the hands-on, interactive, in-person instruction most students are accustomed to receiving. But just because something is unusual does not mean it is bad.
In order to get the most out of virtual learning, it is important to approach it with an open mind. In the end, there might be some parts of virtual learning you actually enjoy – like increased flexibility and autonomy.
Eliminate distractions.
The biggest issues with virtual learning are the distractions that surround it. How can you stay focused when you can easily turn off your microphone and camera and play on your phone, watch TV, or sleep?
Eliminating distractions is a personal choice that must be made to get the most out of your virtual instruction. Set up in a quiet room, leave your phone elsewhere, turn off computer notifications, and vow to leave your camera on. This will hold you accountable, make your experience more fulfilling, and you’ll go away from it feeling like you got much more out of it!
Be flexible.
As mentioned before, issues are going to arise when all your instruction occurs over the internet. It is important to embrace these issues and understand that they will happen, but also be prepared for them, so that when they do pop up, you do not become overly frustrated.
Taking time to educate yourself on the platform you will be using prior to actually using it, such as how to mute and unmute yourself over Zoom, can help eliminate some of the stress. When something goes wrong, it is okay to laugh about it, because it’s likely the same thing has happened to someone else, too!
