Heating, ventilation and air conditioning, known as HVAC, plays a vital role in creating safe and comfortable spaces where people live and work. Skilled technicians keep these systems running efficiently, improving energy use and supporting homes and businesses across Virginia.

As demand for HVAC professionals continues to rise, FastForward is helping students gain the skills and certifications they need to succeed in this essential trade. The program provides short-term, affordable training that leads to strong careers and lasting connections in the field.

Hear from three HVAC students who are finding success and purpose through training at their local community college.

Finding an HVAC Network

For Harry Ree Pannell, FastForward at Central Virginia Community College has been life-changing, offering both opportunity and encouragement; the supportive community within the classroom standing out most to him.

“One of the perks from enrolling in the skilled trades program through CVCC is the opportunity to grow and connect and network with your classmates as well as your instructors,” he said. “Although you may face difficulties and challenges, your classmates are there to lift you up, pull you through, and help you understand what’s going on.”

A Deeper Understanding

Gavin Bledsoe enjoys the variety of hands-on learning available through FastForward at Mountain Empire Community College. The HVAC program has given him a deeper understanding of how HVAC connects to other trades.

“I’ve studied everything from electrical to heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration all the way to mechanical aspects in industrial trade,” said Gavin.

The experience has expanded his skills and confidence, preparing him for a career that values both technical knowledge and practical experience.

Bettering Yourself

Josh Cassimore first discovered HVAC at Southside Virginia Community College a few years ago and quickly realized it was the right fit for him.

“I got into the trade a couple of years ago and I really enjoy working with my hands,” he said. “I’m just trying to better myself and make myself more valuable.”

Through FastForward, he has been able to grow his expertise and stay motivated as he continues advancing in his career, including starting his own business.
