Training at Community College

Virginia’s Community Colleges is the commonwealth’s primary workforce training provider.

FastForward is offered through all 23 of Virginia’s Community Colleges. It is a financial assistance program that rewards students who successfully complete training and earn a high-demand industry certification. In addition to funding and incentives only offered at Virginia’s Community Colleges, by training at a community college, students can access campus resources, student benefits and explore the next steps for future education.

Typically, workforce training programs have a designation of “noncredit,” which means you’re taking a class at a community college, but you don’t earn any college credit for it. However, Virginia’s Community Colleges have worked hard to draw comparisons between noncredit courses and credit courses to ensure students can earn what’s called “credit for prior learning.” Between military service and previous work experience, you may have earned college credit you don’t know about.

What is Credit for Prior Learning?

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) translates work and life experience into college credit for adult learners, helping you save time and money. CPL comes from things like career experience and training, military service, standardized exams and tests, professional certifications and awards and credits earned at other colleges. Virginia’s Community Colleges’ tool Credits2Careers can help you see what credits you may have already earned.
